We were so saddened when we received word from Aunt Betty about Joel's passing. Although we have never had the blessing of meeting him, knowing the closeness of the family and reading about him just warmed our hearts. He was a poster child of what we all hope for in our family. Although we can't understand why such a fine child would be taken, we can be comforted in knowing Our Savior holds Joel and you close to His heart. May Christ bless you with His peace which surpasses all understanding.

I only met Joel a couple times as I watched practices and games. But I can tell that you and Springdale, PA raised a son who had a great impact on this world. He caused others to find new places in their own personalities where they now dwell on joy and optimism instead of shyness and self-doubt! He got people to live! I love him for that.

As a fellow Pioneer, my heart, prayers, and sympathies go out to all those whose life was touched by Joel in even the slightest manner. I knew Joel from the time he was in EXCEL and when he attended Energy Business Alliance's tours (a petroleum engineering related campus org) and meetings. Joel was active in our Marietta College community in so many ways, and as President of Energy Business Alliance, myself and many others have collectively decided to name our first set of simulated horizontal wells after him so that his legacy will live on and always be remembered, yet push us as students to be as ambitious and happy as he was. You can find our current draft of the pad at http://tinyurl.com/EBAWunnenbergPad1. Notice the first two wells that we are going to (simulate) "drill" are the Wunnenberg 38H and the Wunnenberg 22H to commemorate his love for football. Although this is just a simulated set of wells, our project will go on for years to come. You can find out more about EBA at www.EnergyBusinessAlliance.org and you can see a picture of Joel with our group in front of a rig on the "current project" page.
I am still deeply saddened by the loss of Joel, and my prayers and thoughts will continue to be with you all in this hard time. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you and your family. God Bless.

To the family of this bright, smiling, precious young man,
You may not know us, but we felt led to respond as we see so many people parking to pay their respects and show their love. There is nothing anyone of us can say or do to even remotely ease your heartache and loss. I just felt led to let you know it touched our hearts, my husbands and mine, to read about Joel. Just looking at his picture tells me he was special and loved. A sweet natured, amazing young man who touched many lives over his own. We are so very sorry for your loss and offer up our prayers for all of you to get through this. I pray all your precious loving memories will ease your loss, bring you comfort, and in time healing. As the parents of 3 sons--all grown, we can appreciate how precious Joel was to so many as he touched their lives. I'm sure he left a special imprint on everyone he met and will never be forgotten. He will remain in their hearts forever. God Bless. ----- Ron and Cindi Renaldi

There are Angles that God puts on this Earth Who care for us and guide us. You can feel there gentleness and kindness as they walk through life beside us. They do great things for us every day they whisper in our ears, they even told us in their hearts when we are filled with our fears. They are always there to give a hug and try to make us smile. They treat us with respect and love; they treat us like their child. God blessed us with an Angel, we were proud to call our own. He has been there in times of trouble and doubt. He has guided us to the best he could, he has treated me with no other, and I am thankful I am the lucky one who gets o call him… my Friend Joel . Family of Joel if you ever need someone to talk to please know that I am here to listen.

Although I did not know Joel, I want the family to know that I have been thinking about and praying for you. I understand that he was a wonderful young man. I had some of his teammates in my freshman class this fall and I know they will truly miss and keep Joel in their memories. I know Joel volunteered at the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley and loved walking the dogs, so I will be making a donation in his honor. I hope knowing that others are thinking of of you offers a small measure of comfort.

I was so sorry to learn of Joel's unexpected passing. As former head of the Petroleum Engineering Department, I can tell you that everyone of our students is part of a large family of faculty, staff, and students at MC. Joel's loss has hit the Petroleum Engineering family hard. I want to express my sincere condolences to all of you. I can't imagine the unbearable grief you have experienced. Take comfort in the Lord at this difficult time and know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and Joel.
