Stephen Matisz

Stephen Matisz, 95, Cheswick, passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023 at home. Steve was born Dec 27, 1927, to his late parents, Martin John Matisz and Carolina Rose Dunaj. Steve was a lifelong resident of the valley, born in Glassmere and raised in Barking and Springdale with his 11 siblings, which they and many loved nieces and nephews affectionately referred to him as "Babe.” Steve's early employment helped lay the original railroad tracks through the Lower Valley and later he was employed for 35 years at Gulf Research Lab in Harmarville as a master carpenter before his retirement. Steve enjoyed doing his carpentry work, golfing and especially loved spending time with his family, always singing, playing the harmonica and telling jokes since his childhood. He also loved family parties and events. Steve was married to his greatest love, Janet, for 71 years until her passing in 2021. Surviving him is his daughters, Diana Matisz, his loving care giver, of Cheswick, Sharon (Robert) Greco, of South Carolina, Claudia Cecchetti (John Shriver), of Marionville, and Janice (Clyde) Dreher, of Ohio; sons, Douglas Matisz, of Springdale, and Mark (Shelia) Matisz, of Cheswick; daughter in-law, Karen Matisz, of Cheswick. Steve also leaves behind 14 dear grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and 11 siblings, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Janet; his son, Stephen Matisz; and daughter in-law, Susan Matisz.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday Jan. 9, 2023, in THE CHARLES B. JARVIE SPRINGDALE FUNERAL HOME INC., 801 Pittsburgh St. where blessing services will commence at 10 a.m. Tuesday with burial to follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.
