Paul Lutz Obituary

Paul Michael Lutz

April 28, 1929 ~ May 6, 2026

Paul Michael Lutz, 97, of Springdale passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 6th at Rosebrook Assisted Living in Sarver.  Born April 28th, 1929, in his Aunt's house in Homestead, PA, he was the youngest of eight children of Mary Magdalene (Weber) and Samuel Paul Lutz. He grew up in the Hays section of Pittsburgh, but Springdale was where he lived most of his wonderful life raising a family with his best girl, Erma Jean.

In 1949 Paul met Erma Jean Scholtz while on a fishing trip near Tidioute. It was her nineteenth birthday. Paul proudly served his country as an army corporal in Anchorage, Alaska during the Korean War. They were married at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church in Springdale on Valentine's Day, 1953, while Paul was on leave.  Their storybook marriage lasted over 70 years and gave the world 6 children, 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Their love lives on in their family, and their devotion was clear to everyone who knew them.

Paul graduated from Carrick High School in 1947 and later completed a Dale Carnegie business and insurance program while embarking on his career as an insurance agent.  He eventually opened an office in his home on Colfax Street: The Paul M. Lutz Insurance Agency and later flourished as a 24/7 Notary Public until the age of 92 - come for the Notary, stay for the jokes & stories.

He had quite a few signature activities and interests including winemaking, woodworking, fixing anything broken, and others too numerous to mention.  He became an avid painter in his sixties, and his passion for the arts is on display in the homes of family and friends everywhere.  He was a life member of The Springdale Volunteer Fire Department, along with his father-in-law and mentor Frank Scholtz. He and Frank built a cottage on the riverbank of the Allegheny at the sacred place where he first met Erma Jean that became the family’s regular vacation destination.

Paul and Erma Jean were devoted members of St. Alphonsus, where Paul was a regular lector and served as Grand Knight of the local council of the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his dear Erma Jean on January 10, 2024; his beloved son David in 2015; three brothers: Frank, Edward and Richard; and four sisters: Edith Goodrum, Thelma Mastacusa, Grace Lawrence, and Norma Grimes.  He is survived by five of his children: Christine (Herbert) Lutz-Mahone of Mt. Ulla, North Carolina, Larry (Judy) Lutz of Sarver, Karl (Diana) Lutz of Natrona Heights, Mary Jean (Joseph) Bujdos of Indiana, PA and Michael (Jason) Lutz of Pittsburgh.

The family wishes to express special thanks to all of the kinds staff members and friends at Rosebrook Assisted Living and Amedisys Hospice. Also thanks to the many people who took the time to visit, call, and send cards and prayers that meant so much to our parents.  Please do something to make someone smile today in their honor.

We will be celebrating his life and legacy on Friday, May 15th at CHARLES B. JARVIE SPRINGDALE FUNERAL HOME INC. 801 Pgh.
