Mary Ellen Werries Freudenrich passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026, following a long battle with complications from type 1 diabetes.
Mary Ellen was born on September 6, 1956, in New Kensington. She grew up in Springdale and graduated from Springdale High School in 1974. She worked at Glenshaw Glass company in Etna as a bottle inspector. Early in her career, she reconnected with her high school classmate William Freudenrich, whom she married in 1984.
Mary loved watching and rooting for Pittsburgh sports teams, most notably the Penguins and Steelers. She loved rock and roll, often playing Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones with the dial turned up as high as it could go. Her fondest memories were of going to concerts with her friends or brothers and sisters. She loved spending time with her large and close-knit family, walking nature trails at local parks, and she loved lottery scratch tickets—always hoping her penny would uncover big wins under the wax. Mary was dependable, compassionate, and always willing to give of herself. She never missed an opportunity to laugh.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents: father Michael Werries and mother Anna Louise Pizer Werries, sister Donna Werries, and brother Michael Werries, Jr. Mary is survived by her husband of 42 years, William Freudenrich, daughter Jill Freudenrich, son Erik Freudenrich (partner Amanda Arce and daughter Lia), siblings David Werries, Larry Werries, Kathy Werries, Peggy Werries, and Richard Werries, sister in law Terry Werries, niece Brianna Werries and nephew Brendan Werries.
Burial will be a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations in honor of Mary to the World Wildlife Fund and the American Diabetes Association.
