John C. Powell

John Coulton Powell, 72, of Pittsburgh, passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 14, 2026.

Born on August 6, 1953, in Pittsburgh, John was a dedicated family man whose life was defined by service to others, a love of sports, and unwavering devotion to his family.

John worked for Blawnox Equipment before moving onto a career at Verizon where he retired after 20+ years.

John devoted 18 years to coaching baseball and served as President of the Blawnox Community Baseball Association. His commitment to his community extended beyond the ballfield through his volunteer service with the Blawnox Auxiliary Police. He believed in giving back and made a lasting impact on the lives of countless young athletes and families.

John was an avid sports fan and enjoyed bringing family and friends together as commissioner of the 4FL fantasy football league. Above all else, he cherished time spent with his family. He was a proud and devoted grandfather who attended all of Haylie's and Coulton's sporting events. Supporting his grandchildren from the sidelines was one of his greatest joys.

John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Phyllis Powell of Pittsburgh; his son, Timothy (Traci) Powell of Pittsburgh; his daughter, Kimberly (Bob) Majewski of Glenshaw; his cherished grandchildren, Haylie Majewski and Coulton Powell; his siblings, Linda Cusack of Sewell, NJ, William (Leslie) Powell of Valencia, Sandra (Thomas) Brugere of Renfrew, Sharon (Rob) Blitzer of Alexandria, VA, and Jen Messina of Valencia; his sister-in-law, Debbie Zucconi of Belle Vernon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Powell of Valencia and Joyce Powell of Butler, and beloved brother-in-law, John Cusack of Sewell, NJ.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate John's life on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at The Mansion in Butler, 141 Mansion Ln, Butler, PA 16002.

John's legacy lives on through the family he loved, the players he coached, the community he served, and the many lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, and steadfast support. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
