Howard C. "Dusty" Rhodes

Howard C. "Dusty" Rhodes, 90, of Cheswick, passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2023. He was born Aug. 4, 1932, in Arnold, and graduated from Har-Brack High School, Class of 1950. He lived in the valley all his life and in Cheswick since 1966. Mr. Rhodes served in the Army Signal Corps. From 1953 until 1955 and served 15 months in Korea. Upon his discharge from the service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Korean Service Medal. Mr. Rhodes was employed by Bell Atlantic from 1952 until he retired in 1991 as an installation and repair supervisor in New Kensington. He was active in Boy Scouts for 13 years and enjoyed camping, traveling and gardening. He was a member of Cheswick Presbyterian Church, Pioneers of America, and the American Legion. Surviving him are two daughters, Lynne (Vincent) Gerthoffer, of Glenshaw, and Lori (Angelo) Palermo, of Springdale; stepdaughter, Rebecca (Ray) Whitney, of Ohio; stepson, Earl (Susan) Redmond, of Tennessee; grandson, Michael Brocklebank; daughter-in-law, Josie Rhodes, of Maryland; 10 step grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph (Patricia) Rhodes, of New Jersey; as well as a niece and nephew. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Blake Rhodes, in 1989; second wife, Mary Redmond Fike Rhodes, in 2021; and son, David Rhodes, in 2022. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2023, in THE CHARLES B. JARVIE CHESWICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1607 Pittsburgh St., where services will commence at 11 a.m. Tuesday with burial to follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.
