Helen Marie (Valkavitch) Babyak

July 31, 1923 ~ May 24, 2022 (age 98)

Obituary

Heaven's bells rang with accordions in Polka-tempo when our beloved Helen was called home Tuesday, May 24, 2022. If you knew her, you know that it must have been a full ensemble of relatives and friends that were waiting at Heaven's Gates to welcome her with elated celebration. Helen Marie Babyak graced this world July 31, 1923, into the arms of her parents, Stanley and Josephine Zak Valkavitch, and was raised in Harwick, along with her two brothers, Walter and Stanley "Rocky". She spent her childhood days in Harwick surrounded by her aunts, uncles and many cousins, where having a houseful of family was a constant companion. Helen's detail to perfection resulted in receiving a diploma from Griffith School of Beauty Culture as a manicurist in 1940 and graduating from Springdale High School in 1941. As our very own "Rosie the Riveter," Helen worked at Scaife War Plant, in Oakmont, assembling mortar shells to support the war efforts in 1943-45. Thereafter, Helen created a career in a number of retail establishments, from grocery stores to Murphy's, Ames and Gold Circle. Helen also brought her customer skills to Wally's Pizza, in Springdale, to assist her brother and owner. What she loved most about her long career was the people that she would meet over her lifetime, many of whom became fast friends. Helen traveled to Hawaii and STILL ran into someone she knew! She absolutely loved life. An inspiration to many, Helen was a woman beyond her time; filled with a confident independence, a passion for traveling and a creative spirit for decorating, painting and wallpapering, even into her 80s! Helen interests did not end there. She spent much time yelling "Bingo" with friends, collecting all the dimes by winning card games with her family, cooking Sunday dinners and instilling family traditions that have come to be cherished. Helen most valued her faith and her family, especially her son, David Allen Babyak, her two granddaughters, Jennifer (Jayson) Covey and Melissa (Cliff) Barackman, her two great-grandchildren, Emily and Nathan, and her great-great-granddaughter, Bentley Joy, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sister-in-law, Marge Valkavitch. Family and friends will be received from 9 a.m. for visitation Friday, May 27, 2022, at the CHARLES B. JARVIE CHESWICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1607 Pittsburgh St., where a blessing service will be held at 11 a.m. with burial to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lower Burrell.
