Edmund Szczesny Obituary

Edmund Szczesny age 97 of Lenexa, KS passed away on November 27, 2024 of natural causes at Sunrise Assisted Living. Prior, Edmund lived 89 years in Natrona, Lower Burrell, and Cheswick, PA. He and Harriet moved to Kansas in 2016 to be closer to Camille and Carl.
Edmund was born September 9, 1927 in Natrona, PA to Stanley and Sophie (Gorney). He joined siblings John, Ted, Pearl, Violet and Mary with Emily arriving in 1929. Polish was an integral part of his upbringing as Stanley never learned English.  Edmund went to Polish school after his regular elementary school and passed on a few Polish words/phrases to his grandchildren. He graduated from Har-brack High School in Natrona Heights.
Edmund tried to join the military at 17 but when they found out he wasn’t really 18, he came home to wait for his 18th birthday. He entered the Army on November 1, 1945 and worked in the Finance Division at Fort Meade, MD. In June 1946, he took additional basic training at Fort McClellan, AL.  From there, he was shipped to Sasebo, Japan to aide in the cleanup Nagasaki.  Corporal Edmund Szczesny was discharged on June 15, 1947.
Upon his return to Natrona, Edmund began his 42 year career at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation in Brackenridge, PA. He spent many years in the office before becoming a foreman on the floor. While in the office, he met Harriett Doyle who worked in shipping.  They were married on May 17, 1952 and enjoyed 68 years of marriage before Harriet passed in October, 2020.
Edmund and Harriett had four children: Edmund Jr (Jeanine), Camille, Carl (Kathy), and Steven (Meredith). He has six grandchildren, Michael, Becky (Taylor Swartz), Drew (Cynthia), Angie, Rachel (Michael Fegula) and Paige (Shawn Donovan) and three great grandchildren with a fourth on the way.
Edmund enjoyed golfing, bowling, dancing at clubs and weddings, vacations and visiting family. He was active in his Catholic faith and looked forward to the Lenten fish fries.
His family has many memories of his generosity and good natured disposition which sometimes included a prank or two. That twinkle in his eyes usually gave him away. We are thankful for his long and blessed life and rejoice that he is dancing away with Harriet.
Edmund was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, John (Ann), Ted, Pearl Malak/Mackowski (Mac), Violet McPherson (Mickey), Mary Kearns (Krasinski) (Bruno) and Emily McPherson (Mickey) and all but one in law, Virginia Engemann Szczesny (Ted) who resides in Natrona Heights.
Edmund will be laid to rest April 2, 2025at 11:00am in Leavenworth National Cemetery alongside his wife.
