Clifford McCalmont Obituary

Clifford T. McCalmont, 83, of Cheswick, went home to God Sunday, May 28, 2023, at home with his loving wife and son by his side. He was born July 18, 1939, in Shady Side, and lived most of his life in Springdale and Cheswick. Cliff worked as a plant lab technician for many years for Chevron in Springdale and later became plant manager after it was sold to United Refining Co. He retired after 38 years of service. He was a 1957 graduate of Springdale High School and later graduated from The Pittsburgh Art institute. Cliff was a member of the Springdale United Presbyterian Church, in which he served as a Deacon and Elder and taught Sunday School. Cliff served in the Air Force, where he honorably served his country, completing three tours of duty in Vietnam. Cliff was involved in many community organizations and civic activities. He was a former Minor League and Little League baseball coach in Springdale. Cliff enjoyed acting and played many roles in numerous productions with the New Kensington Civic Theater and Apple Hill Playhouse. One of Cliff’s greatest achievements was making a difference in others' lives, and he showed this through his lifelong involvement in The Boy Scouts of America. Cliff entered Cub Scouts when he was a young boy and continued in scouting until his passing totaling 76 years; even starting a scout troop while serving his country in Vietnam. He held many positions in scouting including Cub Master, Scout Master, District Advancement Chairman, was a member of Eagle Scout Board of Review and served as the District Chairman for the BSA. He received countless honors and awards, including the Silver Beaver Award, during his time in Scouting and was a great leader and mentor for adults as well as the scouts. Cliff loved his Scottish heritage, hailing from Clan Buchanan, and you could often see him dressed in his authentic Scottish kilt and clothing. He especially enjoyed traveling with Crystal to Myrle Beach to meet friends he served with and their wives, for his annual Air Force reunion. Cliff was a caring and dedicated family man and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, always having a heart filled smile on his face. He always did things, even little things, to make the ones he loved smile; it brought great pleasure to him to see the joy in their smiles. Cliff is survived by his wife of 31 years, Crystal K. McCalmont; a son, Sean Scott McCalmont, of Freeport; a daughter, Kellie Marie McCalmont, of Springdale; a stepdaughter, Katie Wilcox Sprouse, of Cheswick; and a stepson, Troy Daniel Wilcox, of Funkstown, Md.; sisters, Barbara Coleman, of Penn Hills, Patricia Conway, of Ross Township and Judith McCalmont, of California; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Mendel McCalmont; and mother, Delores June Snyder. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2023, in CHESWICK at the CHARLES B.
