Betty Wilt Obituary

Betty Jean Wilt (Elizabeth V. Wilt, née Sober), age 99, of Springdale, PA, died at home on Sunday, November 24, 2024 following a recent illness. Born on January 18, 1925 in Brackenridge, PA, she was the daughter of the late Stephen C. Sober, Sr. and Adelaide C. Schrott. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of almost 70 years, John F. Wilt, her son, Daniel A. Wilt and five siblings, Stephen C. Sober, Jr., Gertrude M. Gustafson, Robert J. Sober, James M. Sober and Gerrianne Dressel. She is survived by 4 children, Dr. Kathryn E. Wilt (Dr. Peter A. Madsen), John S. Wilt (Janet), David G. Wilt (Lisa) and Carolyn M. Studt (Keith). She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Adele Sluka and Marcia Vecchi, and many nieces and nephews.

Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was happiest in the company of her family, especially her grandchildren of whom she was so proud. But this love extended beyond just her family. She had a remarkable gift for making anyone she met feel uniquely special. When she spoke with you, it was as if you were the only person in the world, captivating her full attention.

Betty took a deep and genuine interest in others, never forgetting a detail — always following up to ask how an event turned out or checking in on something you’d mentioned in passing. Her warmth and attentiveness made those around her feel valued and deeply loved, a quality that will be cherished by all who knew her. She valued true connection to those around her, whether she had known you for decades or just met you. Once a friend of Betty’s, always a friend of Betty’s.

She had a sharp wit, keen sense of humor and an incredible memory. Her stories of growing up during the Depression, Prohibition and living through the Great Flood of 1936 enthralled the family. An independent thinker, she was not swayed by the current and never took the easy way out. She demonstrated how one can continue to grow throughout one’s life.

Betty was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School. Prior to her marriage, she was an executive secretary at Allegheny Ludlum Steel and in later years worked alongside her husband, John, as an office manager for his State Farm Insurance Agency in Springdale. She attended St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church where she was a longtime member of the church choir, a Eucharistic minister, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She volunteered for countless committees throughout her lifetime, always in the background and never calling attention to herself. She played the supporting role for everyone in her life so they could lead and shine.

Betty enjoyed life’s simple pleasures – a daily piece of chocolate, a good cup of coffee, playing cards and cheering on her grandchildren at school and sporting events. Sharp with words, her hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles and the jumble daily. She enjoyed spending time with younger people, perhaps contributing to her outlook and longevity.

As many have said, “to know Betty was to love her.” Her life was a testament to her strong spirit and unwavering commitment to those she loved. Betty’s legacy of love and genuine connection will live on in the hearts of all those she touched – a lasting reminder of the profound impact she had on all who knew her.
