Ruth Bernice (Bigley) Durand, 99, of Lower Burrell, formerly of Springdale, went home peacefully to our lord Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018. Ruth was the beloved wife of 56 years to the late John Durand; loving mother of Walter (Darlene) Durand, of New Kensington, and the James Durand, of Front Royal, Va.; daughter of the late George Walters Bigley and Alfrieda Kapteina Bigley; and sister of the late John Bigley. She is survived by grandchildren, Lisa (David) Bellinotti, Lori (Michael) Zale, Michelle Stuckey, Jeffrey (Francesca) Durand, Jason (Jennifer) Durand, Nichole (Igor) Mijajlovic and Jennifer (Michael Henley). Ruth is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She graduated from Springdale High School and the Grace Martin School in Pittsburgh, which prepared her for work in one of the banks in Springdale. A homemaker for many years, Ruth was a wonderful cook and a great baker, known by everyone as the "Apple Dumpling Queen." She also enjoyed traveling, particularly with her friends, family and relatives. She was one of the oldest lifelong members of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where she was a longtime choir member and alternate organist and participated in many church organizations. An uncomplicated person with a beautiful heart, Ruth loved her family dearly and was the family matriarch for many years. The family wants to thank the staff of the Logan Place Senior Living community and the Monarch Hospice in Lower Burrell for all the wonderful care that they gave her over the past few months. Both institutions made Ruth's life more pleasant and allowed her to live her last days on earth with dignity. Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, in THE CHARLES B. JARVIE SPRINGDALE FUNERAL HOME INC., 801 Pittsburgh St. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, in Springdale.
