Emmet Thomas Downing

Emmet Thomas Downing, 92, of Cheswick, passed away peacefully Friday, July 6, 2018, in Amber Woods. He was the son of the late Emmet and Kathryn Auttermohlen Downing, and a lifelong resident of the community. He graduated from Springdale High School and served his country in the Navy. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Tom worked as a pressman for the former Allegheny Label Co. in Cheswick, where he eventually retired. Mr. Downing was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, in Harwick, where he was a longtime usher. He also belonged to the Springdale Veteran's Association. He liked to read, golf and especially enjoyed time spent with his family. Surviving him are daughter, Kathryn Downing, of New York, sons, Richard (Eddy) Downing, of New Mexico, Michael (Nikki) Downing, of California; brother, John (Doris Jean) Downing, of Ohio; three grandchildren, Aaron, Cory and Courtney; three great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Braylon and Logan; and many loving nieces and nephews, grand and great-grand-nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Downing was also preceded in death by his wife, Irma Marie Vidmar Downing. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2018, in the CHARLES B. JARVIE CHESWICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1607 Pittsburgh St. Veterans services will be at 7 p.m. Monday. A blessing service will commence at 11 a.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Alan Morris of Our Lady of Victory.
