Kenneth H. Bushman

Kenneth H. Bushman, 91 of Indiana Twp. died Monday May 8, 2017 in Amber Woods . He was born August 10, 1925 in Springdale to the late Edith Bushman and was a lifelong resident. Private 1/c Bushman, a WWII Veteran was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in action on January 25, 1945 when a strong enemy force broke into the town of Schweighausen, France. Private Bushman’s platoon was surrounded, and in the fight to withdraw was forced to leave four ¼ -ton trucks and trailers loaded with equipment behind. Private Bushman, with others, volunteered to recover the vehicles. When the detail had fought its way through mortar, machine gun and small arms fire to the vehicles, Private Bushman covered one of his comrades who ran to a truck, started it and drove by his covering position. Private Bushman jumped into the moving vehicle, covering the withdrawal with his rifle fire.  He was a retired scheduler for PPG automotive glass of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh with 38 years of service. Some of Ken’s hobbies were his love of cats, and feeding birds in his yard which brought him great joy. He also loved music and was always singing. He was an avid reader and had an extensive collection of books. One of his big loves was traveling. His wife and he went behind the Iron Curtain to Czechoslovakia at a time when this was not the norm. He was also a lifelong member of the Springdale Methodist Church. Ken was a kind, compassionate, and gracious man who dearly loved his wife Catherine, whom he met at Springdale High School. Ken is survived by three cousins, Deborah Miller of Crozet, Va., Pamela Pfeiffer of Windham, Maine, and Lorie Baxendell of Pittsburgh. Friends will be received Thursdsay May 11, 2017  from 2-5 pm in SPRINGDALE at the Charles B. Jarvie Funeral Home Inc.  801 Pittsburgh Street and from Friday morning 10 am May 12th till services at 10:30  by the Rev. Megan Berkebile officiating, with burial next to his wife Catherine in Deer Creek Cemetery Harmar Twp. Memorial Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
